Blah Blah Blah

BoredomMan, things have been unusually boring around here.  No excitement.  No drama.  It’s nice!  Just Momma, Ace, and me living our sheltered little lives. 🙂

I guess that is a good thing.  It’s better than being bombarded with bad luck.

Well, there is one exciting thing in the child development forefront…Ace has started to stand on his own!

After nine months he has gained the strength and balance to successfully stand in place on his own two feet.  Not for a very long period of time (about 10 seconds), but damn is it cool!  He acts like no big deal, but I get so excited and usually scare him to death (which makes him fall down). 😀

I guess he is close to being considered a toddler?  Momma will be sad.  Her little baby is growing up… 🙁

I say, keep it up little man!  In no time at all we will be hiking across the wilderness of our backyard on the hunt for those creepy crawly little bugs that we can capture in a mason jar.

Momma looooves bugs, so we will definitely have to bring them inside to show her how good of hunters we are!

Congratulations!

Just wanted to give a quick congratulations to ManAndHisBaby.  They had their baby boy on 12/5 at 9:08 AM.  Go give him a congrats and also check out his blog for some “Adventures Of A New Daddy”.

I Wish I Was A Kid Again

We just got our first snow last night in central Ohio. I woke up this morning to a wonderful snow covered landscape. It was so peaceful, yet exciting at the same time.

Snow On The Truck (12/5/07) Snow In The Backyard (12/5/07)

Remember when we were kids? I remember waking up seeing the snow and before I was even out of bed, yelling, “Mom! Is school canceled?”

“Not yet!,” Mom replied, “Come get some breakfast!”

The entire time my brother and I were eating an entire loaf worth of cinnamon toast, we were planning what we were going to do with our snow day.

Should we build a snowman? Should we build a fort and have snowball fights? Should we dig tunnels into the snow drifts? Will anyone take us sledding?

After patiently waiting for the radio to go through all of the school cancellations we finally heard the name of our school. We would jump up and down and rejoice!

Diving into the closet we would break out our slew of winter clothes. Snow pants, coats, hats, gloves, long underwear, boots, and those thick socks.

Did you have multiple sets of winter clothes? Remember playing outside for so long that your gloves and the knees of your pants were just soaked! Snot was dried onto your face mask, and spit crystals formed around the mouth of it?

Mom would call us in for lunch. We would come inside and strip down to our skibbies. We scarfed down whatever she whipped up that day. Mom would put the snow clothes from the morning play session on top of the furnace ducts so that they would be dry if we needed to change yet again that day. Then we put on our second set of fresh, dry, snot free snow clothes. Then we put on our second set of fresh, dry, snot free snow clothes and ran outside to do it all over again!

*** At this point I leave dream world and snap back into reality ***

Well, today was nothing like that for me. I didn’t eat breakfast because that requires me to get up 15 minutes earlier. There was no getting excited about anything. I didn’t listen to the radio for a work cancellation…because that just doesn’t happen. Since work wasn’t cancelled I hopped in my truck and drove across town. The normal 45 minute drive turned into 2.5 hours.

I was THIIIS close to turning around, going home, and taking a snow sick day.

Man, I wish I was a kid again!

I guess I can wait until Ace is in school and starts getting snow days. Maybe then I could justify staying home from work and playing in the snow all day long. Snotty snow mask and all! 😀

Tough Love vs. Spanking

I got this letter from a friend today.  Thought I should share it…

Dear Jared,

It seems that these days most Americans think it is improper to spank children, so over the years I tried other methods to control my kids when they had one of “those moments.”

One that I found effective is for me to just take the child for a car ride and talk.  They usually calm down and stop misbehaving  after our car ride together.

This worked so well for my children that I now use the method on my grandchildren.  I’ve included a photo below of one of my sessions  with my grandson, in case you would like to use the technique.

Sincerely,
A Friend

Bah Humbug!

I love the holiday season. All of the gift giving, the snow starts falling, the family get togethers, and the free food. I’m so excited for Ace to have his first Christmas, and want to make it special and memorable. But the holidays are not all fun and games. There are a few of things I dislike about the holidays.

  1. Spending Money – I am a tight wad. I admit it openly. If there is one thing I hate, it is spending money. Now don’t get me wrong. I like to buy gifts for everyone, but I don’t think we should spend as much as we do. The problem is that we go to see so many different places and see so many different people on Christmas and everyone buys for us, so we feel obligated to buy for everyone else. Our combined family is BIG! After buying gifts for visits to my Grandma and Grandpa in-law’s, then to my Mom’s, then to my Mother and Father in-law’s, then to my Grandmas, then to my Dad’s, and finally our own Christmas gift giving celebration…we are BROKEBROKE. Done. Cooked. Burnt!

  2. Preparation – All the running around to different stores, putting things in lay-a-way, paying on the lay-a-way, getting out the decorations from the basement, wrapping the gifts, and coordinating all of the family gatherings so that it is convenient for everyone. Mentally exhausting!
  3. Taking Up Precious Time – There are only two things that I don’t have enough of…money and time. It’s hard enough during a non-holiday month to get caught up with all of my regular responsibilities in order to have some free time to have some fun. Not only do we have to allot time for everything in #1 and #2, we also have to allot time for consuming two full days of the month…the 24th and 25th. With 31 full days in December, after subtracting all of the time preparing for the holidays, it feels like I have five whole days left in the month to be productive.
  4. Pretending To Like Gifts – I know I am not the easiest person to buy for. I already have a lot and don’t ask for much, but why would you waste your money on something totally useless? If you don’t know what to buy for me…buy lottery tickets. $$$
  5. pink-elephant.pngThe Drama – There is always drama somewhere. Never fails. One family member is not getting along with another family member and there is always tension in the room. This kind of things just eats me up! Everyone is usually civil, but there is always that pink elephant sitting on the couch next to me. Pink elephants look cuddly, but are vicious wild creatures! Beware!
  6. The Pass Me Around Game – I personally don’t mind for everyone to want to hold Ace and play with him, but Ace can not stand it. Ace and large groups of people tossing him around the room like a hot potato do not get along. He gets over stimulated, worn out, and downright cranky. No amount of formula, rocking, swinging, tickling, or funny faces can calm him down. The only thing we can do is bear the grumpiness until he runs out of energy and passes out. 😀

Looking back on my list I notice that all six things can be summed up into four broad categories…

  1. Lack Of Money
  2. Lack Of Time
  3. Stupid People
  4. Crying Babies

I’m going to try real hard to not let these things get in the way of everybody having a good time and enjoying the holidays, but it’s going to be a challenge…now where is that egg nog?
