Two years ago today Ace made his first appearance in this world. It’s amazing how fast time flies…can it really be two years already?
Momma is sad that her little baby…is not so much of a baby anymore. I am excited that my little boy is becoming…well, a little boy.
So, what has happened in Ace’s 2nd year? A whole lot…
Ace has figured out that the world extends much farther than the walls of our home. The boy loves to be outside, at the park, riding on the mower, swimming in the pool, swinging on the swingset, or at the zoo.
He no longer fits in the kitchen sink for bath time, so we had to actually finish installing the bath tub in our upstairs bathroom. He has some foam letters that float in the bath tub, and at only two years old, he can tell you what every single letter is…both upper and lower case. (He’s a genius)
Ace spent his summer going new places and doing new things. Remember going to COSI, doing the chicken dance on the field at Cooper Stadium, going to Iowa for vacation, and swimming at the beach? We had a blast last summer…
Not everything last year was cheerful and happy though. We had to put down our family dog, Buddy. And after trying for 11 months, we got pregnant, and then mis-carried. Ace was young enough that he wasn’t really affected though, which is a good thing.
Last fall Ace drank his last bottle, went to his first fly-in and demo derby, went to Circle-S-Farms, and dressed up like a Vampire for trick-or-treat.
Winter time brought on Wildlights at the Zoo, an amazing Christmas, a new fish tank, and locking Momma out of the house.
So what will next year bring? So far we have a two week vacation planned at the end of summer, which I’m sure will provide some good blog fodder. Other than that I’m sure there will be some more mower riding, swimming, playing, and hopefully….some potty training!
Ace’s birthday party is planned for this weekend, and I know of at least one present he is getting that will get some exposure time here on DadThing. Stay tuned to hear all about his newest big boy toy!

Momma turns 28 today!
( Hope I don’t get in trouble for revealing her age.
)
I’ve been out of town all week for work and expect to get home tonight to celebrate her birthday. I missed Momma’s Birthday last year. So, just incase I get stuck out of town again I wanted to tell her Happy Birthday face-to-face…or as close as I can get to face-to-face.
So without further ado…
Happy Birthday To You!
Happy Birthday To You!
Happy Birthday Dear Momma…
Happy Birtday To You!

Momma and I ventured our way deep into the mob of people who take over down town every year to catch a glimpse of the colorful explosions…and a mob it was! From young ganstas to old bitties, everyone was in attendance.
We found a great spot, on top of a bridge about 200 yards or so from where they let off the fireworks. AMAZING VIEW! (and an even more amazing neck cramp) I’m glad we didn’t take Ace to this firework display though! The booms were loud enough and strong enough that I could feel my heart flutter every time one went off…and Ace wasn’t too keen when the neighbor was letting off firecrackers earlier in the week.
After experiencing one of the best displays of controlled explosions I think I have ever seen, we sat in traffic for about an hour before getting home. It’s alright though…there was plenty to entertain us.
First, a bunch of the whitest white boys, with white boy dancing skills, were getting jiggy to some Michael Jackson…in the back of a lifted pick up truck in the parking lot. “THRILLER! THRILLER!” I’m betting alcohol had absolutely no influence there…
Second, we were entertained by the guy who was stuck down town. His “friends” left him to find his own way home. He was yelling into his cell phone trying to get someone to come pick him up. What I learned… if your in need of some help…yelling and screaming into the phone at someone when you are trying to influence them to pick you up…probably won’t get you anywhere…except more PO’d!
I can’t laugh to much though…I’ve been left somewhere by some “friends” and it took a $40 taxi ride to get me home.
The next night one of the smaller suburbs were doing their fireworks. We took Ace this time and did not get very close at all. Tryin to ease him into the big BANGS and BOOMS, ya know?
He loved it! If he concentrated any harder his eyeballs would have popped right out of his head. I think next year is a GO for the big fireworks celebration down town for Ace.
So, if I were not looking forward to next years fourth of July celebration with Ace, I would say is there a way, it could stay, Independence Day?
PS: The camera has been acting up lately, so I did not get any pics from this weekend. However it is working again, so there will be some more exciting pics coming soon!

Well, the poll has been up for a little more than one month and we have had 25 votes. Here are the results:

Momma did all the shopping this year, like always, so I’m not sure how much we actually spent on Ace, but I would guess it was in the $101-$200 group.
So, it looks like we are right in there with the majority of parents! I feel better now.

December 11th, 2007
So the season is in full swing, and our family gets to start celebrating Christmas this weekend! Sunday is the only day that my cousin, who lives about 150 miles away, can make it down for the holiday, so that is the day my mother’s family is choosing to celebrate Christmas. How can this be…….it’s only the 16th for crying out loud! But this is just the beginning I realize, holy crap!
Here’s the schedule so far, and let’s hope things don’t get changed:
Sunday, 12/16: Grandpa and Grandma S’s house
Monday, 12/24: Great-Grandpa and Great-Grandma T’s house at 6pm in Columbus. Then we must leave by 7:45 at the latest to be to Grandma and Grandpa O’s house by 9pm that night in Urbana.
Tuesday, 12/25: Breakfast at Great-Grandma W’s house at 9am in West Liberty. Then back to Columbus for lunch with my immediate family at Grandpa and Grandma S’s house.
Monday, 12/31: Grandpa H and Grandma Cindy in West Liberty for presents at 5 and then a rowdy party that evening! (Ace will be going back to the grandparents in Urbana for that portion of the evening, Mom and Dad want to party too!)
Okay, so here’s my question; when are we having our family Christmas? It was never a big deal before, we just spent four days a month driving all over Ohio to celebrate with our family and friends, but now with Ace, it just seems too much. How do we not go though? Who’s feelings would we choose to hurt if we decide to skip one house or the other? I never really thought about this until now, but the plans are made, the gifts are bought, and we are going!
What a nightmare waiting to happen! Merry Christmas Everyone!
(I will not be posting on the 24th, as you can see from above, we will not be in town and I hope that everyone is busy with their families instead! Happy Holidays!)

November 1st, 2007
Well, I made it back from Baltimore on time! YAY! I arrived at the factory where I was doing the work at 11:00 and had the machine fixed and was out the door by 12:30. Caught a flight at 2:30 and was home by 4:00. I think I broke every land and air speed record known to man!
Enough about work…let’s get to the fun stuff…
We got Ace dressed up in his skunk costume. Here are a few pictures from before our journey…

I was surprised that most people knew what he was. Honestly, just by looking at the costume, I wouldn’t have known. We were greeted by many people saying…
- “Oh, look at the little stinker!”
- “Oh that’s what I smelled!”
- “Oh, how cute! Look at the….lamb?”
However, since Ace doesn’t walk yet I carried him most of the way. We brought the stroller, but I just didn’t feel right standing in line with the little kids waiting on candy. When I would get up to the porch I would say “Trick-Or-Treat!” and then turn around and point towards the stroller on the sidewalk…”It’s for my boy.” I felt pretty stupid, so I sacrificed my arm muscles for candy. (Not to mention I was secretly showing him off to the neighborhood, as any proud Dad would do.) I decided that having my arms morph into limp slivers of Jello was well worth such a fun experience.
During the trek across town and back we saw many unique and unusual things…
- The high school trick or treaters… If you are old enough to grow a mustache…you shouldn’t be begging for candy. Also, if you have to put your cigarette in your mouth so that you can hold your bag open…there’s a good chance you shouldn’t be out getting candy with the youngins.
Just my opinion…
- Second were the sluts-in-training…I mean improperly dressed pre-teen girls. Belly shirts, tube tops, fishnet stockings, high heeled shoes, big hair, and too much makeup. Any Prostitute Momma or Pimp Daddy would be so proud! I can hear Pimp Daddy when the little girls got home….”Where’s my cut of the candy, hoe?”
- Third was the miniature horse. That’s right! A miniature horse on a leash in the city! Somehow we got onto the subject of horse poop, and one of my friends said that horse poop is like dust. I’ve never seen a cloud of poop behind a horse, have you?
- Fourth were the numerous pets in costume (no offense BusyDad)
- Fifth would have to be the lame costumes. You can’t wear jeans and a hockey jersey and call yourself a hockey player! Where is you stick? Where is your helmet? Maybe some missing teeth?
- Sixth would have to be the lack of costumes. One kid had no costume, but was saying, “I’m doing this for my younger brother. He is at football practice tonight and couldn’t go trick-or-treating, so I am getting some candy for him.” Please…we aint stupid! You would just be embarrassed to be seen by your 17 year old peers with a Power Rangers costume on, and you are too lazy to get a job to pay for your own candy!
- Numero seven…The kids that are too lazy to walk from house to house! Seriously there were a couple vans with the sliding doors open. They would stop at one house, 5-6 hooligans would get out and get some candy, then they all got back in the van. The van would drive three houses down, and then they would do it all again! Are you gonna cry because you had to walk a whole block where no one was handing out candy? Where has the work ethic gone in this country? I understand they were being more efficient. Their HPH ratio (Houses Per Hour) probably far exceeded ours, but excessive efficiency, in my book, equals laziness…
- The parents that drove their children from house to house! What great role models! I can hear it now…”I’ll drive you from house to house, but I’m going to need some of your candy to help offset the cost of gas. Deal?”
- My favorite was the local bar that had the kids come inside and pick three items of candy off of a table. It just didn’t look right to see a line of kids entering “The Red Brick” for a treat. It was a good gesture and they had the best of intentions, but it just looked funny.
I have to quote something that my brother-in-law said at the end of the night as we were talking about all of the crazy things that we had seen… He said, “A person can be very smart, but people in general are dumb.” My question is…are people in general really dumb? Or is free candy just dumby bait? Or are people so intoxicated by the sugar rush that they left their inhibitions, morals, and values at home? Your guess is as good as mine…
All in all we had a great time…both enjoying Ace’s first Trick-Or-Treating experience, and also watching all of the inhabitants of this wonderful city.
As you probably know, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be going Trick-Or-Treating or not, so I didn’t put much thought into a costume for myself. At the last minute I came up with the following costume… Can you guess who I am?

I’m the ex-lobster panty specialist…Dorky Dad!
At the end of the night, after walking for about three hours, we were all tuckered out! Especially Ace…

Hope you all had a Happy Halloween! I sure did!

October 30th, 2007
As many of you know I am a travel some for work, and whenever there is something I really want to do, I end up being out of town that day.
Well, tomorrow, Halloween, is one of those days. It is Ace’s first Trick Or Treat and there is a very good chance that I will miss out on it.
I got a call today informing me that I have to be in Baltimore, MD on Halloween day. I can’t say no…it is my job. This kind of thing is expected, but still sucks!
However, I am not giving up hope. From what I’ve been told, this should be an easy job. My flight gets in to Baltimore at 9:30 AM and I should be in the jobsite around 10:30 or 11:00. If I work for three hours and get the machine fixed I can catch a flight out at around 4:00 PM and be home around 6:00 PM when Trick-Or-Treat starts.
My fingers are crossed…

Yesterday, 10/26, was my birthday! I turned a whoppin’ 29 years old!
We went out to dinner with some friends, then to Magic Mountain to ride some go-carts, and then our younger friends were tired and went home.
Momma and I drove down to the local bowling alley, laced up our bowling shoes, and bowled about three games before heading back to Grandma’s to pick up the little man.
We made it all the way to midnight, unlike our younger counterparts who called it a night at about 10PM.
I may be getting older, but that is not going to stop me from having a good time! By the way, since when does bowling make you sore the next day???

Today is my wife’s birthday! She is ?? years old. (I’m no dummy. I man could get killed for publishing his wife’s age online!)
It really sucks that I couldn’t spend time with her on her birthday. I travel some for work. I go to different factories and fix their machinery. Sometimes I have to spend the night in a hotel somewhere. It is usually last minute and impossible to plan for. It always seems that it is on a night when something important is happening! We were supposed to be going out to dinner tonight with some of our friends.
That’s what I love about my wife. She understands. She understands that my job is demanding at times and doesn’t get upset about it. She knows that I would much rather be at home changing dirty diapers!
Well, dear…I hope you had a happy birthday. Sorry I couldn’t be there to share it with you! I’ll make it up to you…I promise! Tell Ace that Daddy will be home to see the both of you as soon as possible!
