2010 Vacation – Outer Banks, NC

Again this year we went to the Outer Banks for vacation.  We had a great time!  There were eight adults that went so we were able to split the cost and rent a really nice beach house!

Our Vacation Rental House At The Outer Banks

To get to the house you had to drive eight miles on the beach!  There were no roads to get to the house.  If you ever go to this part of the Outer Banks make sure you do your research and only attempt to drive on the beach at low tide.  :D   We got stuck twice on the way to the house and had to be pulled out both times.  :D

But, once we made it to the house we were able to relax in the pool and hot tub…

And our house was also in the Wild Horse Reserves, so there were wild horses everywhere!  They came right up to our house and even slept in our back yard…

Dad, Here Is The Problem...

Hello From Orlando!

Hi everyone!  If you follow me on Facebook (my profile) you already know that we are on vacation in Orlando this week.

We drove 15 hours from our home to Orlando on Monday night and arrived in Orlando Tuesday afternoon.  Tuesday night we just hung out and recooped from the looong drive.

Wednesday we got up and headed to Sea World!  Ace was rarin’ to go!

Ready To Go To Sea World

We were there when the park opened and had Breakfast With Elmo and Friends…

Breakfast With Elmo

While eating Ace got to meet all of Elmo’s friends.  He got a hug from Telly Monster…

The Dolphin show was simply amazing with the acrobatics, high dives, and stunts with the Dolphins…

It was so cool that Ace sported this face for much of the show…

Your Guess Is As Good As Mine - Funny Face

Overall the first full day in Orlando was a blast!!!

We have two full weeks of vacation planned including…hanging out at the hotel resort, going to Gator Land, and driving up to Duck, North Carolina where we will rent a house for a week and spend some time at the ocean!

Gotta go…Ace is ready to go to the pool!  This kid is a fish!  :D

Like A Tank

Back in October 2007 I bought a new truck…a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4.

It was big and roomy.  It could haul the whole family and a load of firewood at the same time.  It was as good on the highway as it was in the mud.  It could gently pull in the driveway to keep from waking Ace, or it could let ‘er rip and pull a stump out of Grandpa’s yard.

Most importantly, it was safe.  One of the main reasons we decided on this truck was to protect Ace in the case of an accident.  I’m not the only dad that thinks this way either.  Check out BusyDad’s Dada Truck.

Unfortunately I was involved in an accident not too long ago (Thank goodness Ace was not riding with me).  I am not going to go into details about how it happened, because everything is not settled yet, but I will say that there was an accident.  There was damage to the front end of the other car, which happened to be a Honda Civic,  and the rear end of my truck.

I did not get a picture of the other vehicle, but I found a picture online that looks very similar to the Civic that I was involved in an accident with.

Wrecked Honda Civic

WOW!  Right?  The damage was extensive!  I would guess that it was totalled.

So what did the Dodge look like?

Dodge Ram Rear End Damage

That is an actual picture of my truck.  Would you guess that it was in the same accident as the Civic?  Me neither.

While I am sad that my truck was damaged in this accident, I am happy that it performed so well.

People laugh at me all the time about how much gas I go through, about how big my truck is, about how uncomfortable it must be to drive it long distances…but it’s all worth it to me.  I walked away unscathed.   Anyone else who could have been inside would have too.  What else can you ask for?

Now Ya See Me, Now Ya See Me With Only One Eye

Ace is rough.  He does not play nice…sometimes.  He does not think twice about smacking the shit out of you, or kicking you in the nads when you are holding him, or pulling your hair (if you have any), or….poking your eye out!

You heard me right…poking your eye out!

Momma and Ace were playing on the floor and Momma took a fingernail to the eyeball.  She said it hurt like hell, but we both kinda hoped that it would be better in the morning.

Actually it got worse.  I came home from work at lunch to find Momma with an eye that was nearly swollen shut and bloodshot like she had been in one hell of a bar fight the night before.

I drove her and the eye poking two year old to the eye doctor where Momma was given some eye drops and told to keep her eyes closed as much as possible.

She spent the rest of the day resting lying on the couch with gauze taped to her orbit.

But while it is easy to get upset with Ace when he gets rough like this, you just can’t stay that way very long.

I mean, how can you feel anything negative at a face like this?

I promised, a few posts (and weeks) ago that I would put up some of the pics from our latest photo session with Lotz Photography.  These are some of my favorite shots yet of our family, and Ace in particular!  He is becoming the little-man-of-1000-faces.  Enjoy… :D

Merry Christmas…from our family to yours!

The Newest Family Member

I should have made this announcement earlier, but wasn’t real sure if the newest family member was just a phase…or the real thing.  But it looks like Teddy is here to stay…

Teddy is the newest addition to our family.

Teddy is the newest addition to our family.

Ace made Teddy at Build-A-Bear, and I’m betting Ace would consider Teddy to be his best friend.  Ace goes no where without his newest companion!

Ace likes Teddy to be nekkid.  If you have ever been to Build-A-Bear you would know that once you build your bear, you have all sorts of options for clothing…underwear, pants, shoes, shirts, hats, and all sorts of other accessories.

When Momma tried putting clothes on Teddy at the Build-A-Bear store Ace went nuts!  So Teddy is nekkid.  Also, once when Ace had a bad diaper rash and refused to put a diaper back on after Momma took one off, she put a diaper on Teddy to try and convince Ace that even his best friend wears a diaper.  Ace wasn’t having it and cried until Momma took it off.  Teddy is not to be wearing a diaper!!! :D

Teddy also gets most of Ace’s kisses.  Ace will give Teddy a big hug and kiss him on the nose.   It’s a crowd pleaser almost everywhere we go.  I’ll have to post a video.  It is just too cute.  :D

Teddy has only been around a few months, but Ace has put him through the ringer a time or two.  He has been dragged on almost every dirty surface known to man.  His nose is always saturated with saliva, and he has been puked on numerous times…including last night.

Teddy doesn’t complain.  He doesn’t cry.  He’s just happy to be sitting in Ace’s lap in the carseat or in Ace’s arms at night to go to sleep.

Welcome to our family Teddy!  It looks like you are going to be around for awhile!  :D

Flying High and Crashing Cars

Last weekend was a blast!  Friday, Momma and I went out to celebrate our 6th Anniversary (we’ve been together for 10 years now)!  Then we went to an awesome dinner at Tony’s Italian Restaraunt here in Columbus, and ended the night out by seeing College the movie…pretty freakin’ funny flick!

Saturday we had big plans.  We drove Ace and his cousin, Olivia, to the town where I grew up to check out a Fly-In.  Here we got to see a bunch of cool air planes.  Instead of blabbing on and on about the planes, I’ll just post some pics…

Then we were off to the Demolition Derby!  One of my favorite things to watch!

My brother had been building a car to drive in the derby.  We went down to watch him wreck his car, but he had to back out at the last minute due to some car troubles.  Oh well, we still had a good time!

Have I ever mentioned that Ace likes anything with wheels?  Well, he does…and he loves derby cars!  He ket pointing at the cars and blabbering in giberish…that means he likes what he sees.  :D

The derby was very crowded and we were late to find a seat, so we had to stand and watch.  Of course there were a few rednecks (I fit right in. :D ) standing in front of us so the kids could not see.

So, here comes dad/uncle to the rescue!  Go go human pedestal!

At the end of a very long day we all had a very good time.  I’m glad that Ace and Olivia enjoyed the planes and the derby so much.  Now I know I have someone to watch the derby with for years to come.  :D

I Wasn’t Invited

Remember the good ole’ days?  The ones where you lived for today.  Your biggest worry was figuring out who was having a party this weekend, and who was going to buy you some alcohol because you were underage!  Remember those days?

If you remember those days you probably remember (or maybe you don’t due to your condition) a few nights where you prayed to the Porcelain God.  Remember that?  Remember putting your face where you usually put your rear end?  Remember giving it everything you had, and then some, and asking the Porcelain God to please make it stop and promising yourself that you would never do it again?

Remember how good the cold bathroom floor felt on your face as you lie there with your pants unbuttoned and probably down around you knees dreading you next worship session?

Well, I forgot about those days until I saw this picture that Momma took of Ace.  Looks like I was not invited to the party…  :D

Toilet Trash

Ace has a new obsession…the toilet!

No, not potty training yet (wouldn’t that be nice!), but playing in it…  :D

He’s been curious about the toilet for a while now.  He would get so excited to see the rush of water wash whatever happened to be in there at the time down into that hole in the bottom of the toilet…never to return again.  :D

So the other day Momma went down to the basement to switch a load of laundry.  When she came back up here is what she found… (it’s a bit blurry, but you get the point)

Ace Playing In The Toilet

Ace Playing In The Toilet

The toilet lid was down.  Ace lifted it up and threw in an empty toilet paper roll as well as a brand new full roll…and was playing away.  :D

The next day I was home with Ace and was cooking up a magnificent lunch (Ramen Noodles) and I see the bathroom door was open.

I had a feeling I was walking into something bad…here is what I found…

Toilet Trash

Toilet Trash

Ace had taken the entire contents of the bathroom trash can and emptied it into the toilet.  Empty cigarette packs, an empty box of razors, some empty toilet paper rolls, a dirty diaper,  a wrapper from a pregnancy test.  Good Lord Kid!

I’m just glad he hasn’t learned how to flush yet… :D

R.I.P. Buddy

We had to do the hardest thing we have ever had to do this morning… Buddy is now running and playing in the plush green grass in doggy heaven.

R.I.P. Buddy

Buddy has been sick for a long time.  He has had epilepsy for many years and needed to take some pretty powerful drugs to keep from seizing.  For the past five years or so he has had trouble with his back…so bad that sometimes he had trouble walking.

He would get better, but not all the way better.  The next time his back acted up it was worse.  Again he would get better, but not better than he was before.  It was a roller coaster ride….downhill.

Despite all of his ailments and injuries he was a happy and playful dog.  Buddy got to do and see more things in his nine years than many people get to see in their lifetime.

I remember when we first got him.  He was the runt of the litter, but was the only survivor.  He had no hair on one of his paws or his tail, but had the best attitude of any puppy I have ever seen…always playful, happy, and loving.

One memory that sticks out clearly in my mind is when Buddy was little and Momma was wearing a pair of bib-overhauls.  Buddy would ride in the front pocket with his two little tiny paws hanging out over the edge.  I’ll never forget that..!

How about the time that he went running through the grass.  The grass was taller than he was and you couldn’t even see him.  He would run…and trip…and run…and trip.  Too cute!

The first time we left Buddy home alone overnight he let us know what he thought about it.  He was still very little and somehow managed to jump up on the couch, drag down a cushion (which was about 10 times his size), pull the cushion to the front door, and poop on top of it.  When we got home the first thing we saw when we walked in the door was Buddy’s welcome home gift.  :D

Another time, when we were moving out of our apartment in Colorado,  Buddy ran out the door and charged full steam at a guy walking a Pit Bull and Doberman.  Right into the middle of them Buddy went.  All I remember is the Pit grabbing him on one end and the Doberman grabbing him on the other.  It was like a fight you would see on Bugs Bunny…a cloud of dust and arms and legs protruding every now and then from the cloud.

The Pit grabbed Buddy and threw him probably 20 feet through the air.  Any other dog would have ran away, but not Buddy.  He ran full steam again and leaped onto the doberman’s back. Again the fight ensued and I had to get in the middle of all three dogs and pull Buddy out.  Somehow Buddy came out of the situation with only a few cuts and scratches.  He was one tough dog!

Buddy loved the Rocky mountains!  He loved to go hiking and camping with us.  Once we were driving down a dirt road through the mountains at about 25 MPH.  Buddy was in the back seat sticking his head out the window letting his ears flop in the wind.  Momma turned around and Buddy was no longer in the car.  I looked in my rear view mirror and he was sitting in the middle of the road all alone…probably thinking that he would now be left to fend for himself in the wilderness.

I stopped, put the car in reverse, opened my door and backed right up to Buddy.  He never moved.  His ears were hanging low and his tail was between his legs.  I’ll never forget the look on his face.  He thought he was a goner for sure.

Buddy never liked bridges or being close to the edge of any kind of drop off.  Any time we went for a walk and had to go over a foot bridge he would low crawl, with his belly about 1/4 inch off the ground, at about 100 MPH across the little bridge.  Being scared of heights didn’t stop him though.  He low crawled across the Royal Gorge Bridge (the highest suspension bridge in the US), and went to the top of Pikes Peak numerous times with us.

I know I’ve said this before, but Buddy was one tough dog!  He never gave up…and he never would have.  I feel bad for giving up on him.  I know he would have continued to fight, but he was fighting a losing battle.

It was the toughest decision we have ever had to make…to take the life of a loved one.  But, I think we made the right decision.  Buddy was not happy.  He was not the playful dog running through the plush green grass anymore.  He was not the dog that would charge two dogs that could kill him with one bite.  He wasn’t the dog who yearned to go for a hike in the woods either.  He was still our little Buddy though…

I’ll definitely miss all of the good times we had, but I’ll also miss driving through the housing complex for hours looking for a run a way dog.   I’ll miss him peeing and pooping on the carpet just after we paid to have it cleaned.  I’ll miss waking up in the middle of the night to hold down a seizing dog to keep him from hurting himself.  I’ll miss him barking like a lunatic every time someone knocked on the door.  I’ll miss stepping in his poop every time I mow the yard.  I’ll miss all of that stuff, no matter how many times I bitched and cussed about it.

All in all Buddy had a great life for a dog.  He was THE PERFECT DOG…at least in our hearts.

Buddy, I hope you are in a better place where you can run and play like you used to.  I hope you are surrounded by kids on bicycles to chase down the street.  I hope you have an unlimited supply of Pupperoni treats.  And most of all I hope you realize that we did what we did…for you.

We miss you and love you Buddy!  And always will!

Play Ball!

The other night we packed up and headed down to the local minor league baseball stadium for Ace’s first baseball game! We were greeted by swarms of fans, the smell of hot dogs and popcorn, and a night full of the All American Past Time…Baseball!

Ace, of course, could care less about the actual game, but was too busy eating Goldfish and smiling at the old ladies. :D

We actually went for one of our friend’s kid’s birthday party, so after the second inning all the kids there for the party got to go out into left field and do the chicken dance with the cheerleaders. So there I am, out in left field with Ace (and the cheerleaders :D ) helping him flap his wings, shake his butt, and clap like a drugged up chicken.

Here are some pics of Ace’s first baseball game…

When we went on our trip to Pittsburgh to pick up the mower deck for the John Deere, we saw this car in a parking lot where we stopped for lunch.  Thought it was funny and had to share it…  :D

Grandpa’s Glory – Part II

Back in October, I wrote a post about Ace’s Grandpa, my Dad.  Ace and his Grandpa didn’t get a long too good at first.  Grandpa would say “Hi!” and Ace would scream like a banshee!

It was tough on Grandpa, but things have been getting better…

Ace, Momma, and I spent all weekend at Grandpa’s just hanging out and swimming in the pool!  We had a blast and got some nice tan lines as a result. :D

As you probably know, Ace loves to ride on the mower, and when Grandpa started his up Ace wasn’t going to quit until he was taken for a ride.  It wasn’t hard for Ace to convince his Grandpa for a quick ride on the mower, but a quick ride turned into 20-30 minutes of lapping the yard.  :D

Grandpa and Ace Riding On The Mower

And after a long day in the sun, nothing is better than a nap in the recliner…

Grandpa and Ace Napping In The Recliner

It makes me think back to when my Grandpa took me for rides on his mower.  Something I will never forget!  I’m going to have to dig up some pictures of me riding on my Grandpa’s mower and napping in his recliner…and post them here of course.  :D

Sometimes it’s scary how much Ace and I are alike… :D
