Bejweled Blitz
So how do you know when you spend too much time playing Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook?
Maybe you check the leader board while on break at work to make sure that no one has beaten your score!
Could it be that you find yourself organizing the cans in your cabinets into groups of three?
Do you dream up ways to sabotage that person’s computer who will always get 200,000 points every single week and you’re lucky to get 100, 000?!
Or maybe…just maybe…a good sign would be your two year old, who only speaks the language of Nick Jr, running around the house saying, “One Minute…Go!”…”Bang Bang Crash”…”A New High Score!”
Maybe…just maybe…that would mean that you play just a little too much.

Well, that crazy blue elephant has returned again this summer…reekin’ havoc upon Ace in his very own backyard.

That damned thing comes out every time it gets warm and teases him with a small shower of cool water, just big enough for a three foot tall person to run through and cool down on a hot summer day.
And then once he gets close enough to enjoy the small shower… WHASHOOSH! The elephant explodes with a massive flood of freezing cold water that pours down on him…sending him into shock and he runs for his life…
He reaches safety just in time to see the monsoon turn once again into a small pleasant shower.
And then he does it again…and again…and again…
But after a while he starts to catch on…

…and he realize that there is a certain someone ( with a camera ) that is enjoying this a little too much. This certain someone turns a knob connected to the hose every time the monsoon rains down on him.
He is getting smarter…wiser…more experienced. It looks like that certain someone will have to step up their game in order to keep fooling this toddler.

This weekend we took Ace and his cousin Olivia to Circle S Farms. You enter through a pathway with corn stalk walls and are greeted by a couple teen age girls who collect your money, and then you proceed to some cool farm-like activities for kids to do.

Circle S Farms - Sign
They had live animals, goats and chickens, for the kids to look at. They had a playground made of straw bails where kids could climb and slide down. They had tractors and bug pumpkins to look at and sit on, and also a hay ride that took you out to pick your very own pumpkin!!

Circle S Farms - Goats

Circle S Farms - Chickens
And then they had the scare crow maze. It was a maze made from straw bails that was designed, I’m pretty sure, for torturing parents. The maze was about 3 ft tall and it had a wood slat fence on the top. So, it was tall enough where kids could run wild inside there, but parents were stuck crawling, duck walking, waddling, or whatever form of propulsion they could come up with while hunched over…
Ace wouldn’t go in the maze, so I took his cousin Olivia inside. There she goes at a full sprint around the first corner. I had lost her in the first 20 seconds.
So I keep wallering through this parent torture device. I was moving as fast as I could trying to find Olivia because I just knew at some point she would get scared and want out, but wouldn’t be able to find her way. I speedily rounded one corner and was greeted by something that I had least expected to find…
CRACK! and lots of it!
There was a Mom crawling in front of me wearing low rise jeans…that were riding, well, WAY TOO LOW! I swore I stopped fast enough for my hands and knees to make a screeching sound in the loose straw!
I stopped inches away from taking a face plant into the recently discovered revene…but far enough away to not smell the flowers.
I was startled, to say the least, and couldn’t help but watch as the landscape I had almost became intimately familiar with bounced it’s way around the next corner.
I put myself back together, gathered my senses, and continued my way through the parent trap to eventually find Olivia waiting for me outside…ready to move on to the next “attraction”.
And now I know why the say, “Crack Is Whack!”
And to help you remove the image of my face inches away from a three quarter exposed bum…I’ll leave you with a few pics from the crack free portion of our day at Circle S Farms…

Today was a good day…one of the better ones I’ve had recently. What did I do? Nothing which will make you say “WOW! Jared is truly amazing!” Ace and I simply hung out all day long.
Ya see it has been a while since Ace and I have really been able to hang out…guy style. I’m talking getting up early, running around in nothing but a diaper (underwear for me), getting dirty while playing in the dirt with no shoes on (and not wiping it off), riding the mower (which still doesn’t mow by the way), eating sand out of the sandbox when Dad turns his back for a half a second (it comes out looking like sand too), going to the park (got even more dirty), and then coming home to relax on the couch and watch some Noggin till Momma gets home. Good times…good times!
I’ve been working long hours during the week, usually getting home late and only seeing Ace for about an hour before bedtime. By the time I get home the nightly routine has began…dinner, bath time, PJs, and shortly after…bed time.
Then on the weekends we usually have some place to go and someone to see.
When Momma was working, Ace and I hung out guy style all the time on the weekends, but now that Momma stays home all week she really wants to go somewhere on the weekend, so we are very rarely home on the weekend.
I think I may start offering Momma the chance to get out of the house to be kid and husband free on Saturday, which will give her a chance to go hang out with some of her friends and give Ace and I more of a chance to do our guy things.
Sounds like an even trade to me, you think so?
On top of having an awesome day with Ace I also discovered a few bloggy friends gave me some cool awards and props!

KylieM from My Digital Life gave me the Brilliante Weblog award. KylieM is a long time reader here at DadThing. If you are into scrapbooking, photography, or kid stuff… you should definitely check out one of her blogs.
And then John over at ModernParent.org links to a few of my posts. John is a first time father who shares his experiences about being a father in the 21st century. Check out his blog for some cool stories and parenting tips from the perspective of a new father.

And last, but not least VegasDad, from iVegasFamily, awarded me with the kick as blogger award! Any award with the word “ass” in it has to be cool…well, unless it is preceded by the word “dumb” or “stupid” or “stank”…you get the point! Go check out Vegas Dad’s blog. I promise it is not dumb, stupid, or stank…just kickin’
Oh yeah……Momma went to the doctor on Friday and is definitely pregnant. The suggested due date is April 11th. We like spring babies around here…or Momma only ovulates around the month of June. Who knows…

Not that kinda swinger, you sicko!
Everyone knows that I frequent Craigslist and find free stuff, like mowers… I’ve been called “The King Of FREE Stuff!” by some friends. Not sure that is a good thing, but I have found some good deals.
Recently I came across another killer deal (AKA FREE)…a swingset!

I found this gem on FreeCycle. (Thanks Sara for being so generous and giving away such a wonderful swing set!)
Momma and I went over to Sara’s house and had to tear the swing set apart far enough that it would fit into the back of my truck. It had not been used in years. It was covered with dirt and moss…but that did not discourage us. We brought the swing set home anyways…
Momma and Grandma S cleaned this swing set up with a little bleach and some elbow grease to like-new condition.
After a few hours of cleaning and reassembling the swing set it was ready to go.
Ace seems to like free stuff too! Here’s proof…

Part of being a Dad, at least for me, is getting to fix things and put things together. Sometimes it can be fun! For example, putting together your kids first bike, easy bake oven, or something else that you know they will love.
However, sometimes it can be not so much fun. For example, crawling through fiberglass insulation in a 120 degree attic to install an attic fan. (I think I sweat about 10 gallons that day.)
A few posts ago I told you about our good deal on the pool. Well, who gets to put this pool up? Dad, of course. (Momma helped too. I can’t take all of the credit.)
One of the important things about putting in an above ground pool is having the ground level. If it is not level the pool will be deeper on one side than the other. A few inches is no big deal, but much over that and you start to have major problems.
Our back yard already had a big dip in it where the people that lived here before us had a pool and took it with them. We figured our pool would go right there…because it is the most level spot in our back yard…so I thought.
It took us three days to till up the dirt and level it out with garden rakes to our satisfaction. While not perfect, it is close enough. Then we put down 18 bags of play sand. (The dude at Home Depot probably thought we built the biggest sand box EVER!)
Next the pool liner, support frame, pump and hoses, and finally the water…6000 gallons of it. (I’m dreading the water bill next month)
After all of that we were left with a functioning above ground pool filled with water so cold that my nipples almost popped right off my body when I jumped in.
After a few days the water temp is tolerable…about 76 degrees…and my nips are much happier now.
Looks like we have a summer full of fun in the sun ahead of us!

The other night we packed up and headed down to the local minor league baseball stadium for Ace’s first baseball game! We were greeted by swarms of fans, the smell of hot dogs and popcorn, and a night full of the All American Past Time…Baseball!
Ace, of course, could care less about the actual game, but was too busy eating Goldfish and smiling at the old ladies.
We actually went for one of our friend’s kid’s birthday party, so after the second inning all the kids there for the party got to go out into left field and do the chicken dance with the cheerleaders. So there I am, out in left field with Ace (and the cheerleaders
) helping him flap his wings, shake his butt, and clap like a drugged up chicken.
Here are some pics of Ace’s first baseball game…

“The Coop”

Ace figuring out his new cow bell…

I think he’s got it figured out…anyone have any Tylenol?

Gotta teach this boy right…any babseball game requires the consumption of at least one hot dog.

What the hell is that thing?

It was an exciting game…

The Chicken Dance (I’m the one squatted down using Ace as a puppet, cause I don;t do the chicken dance, but I sure can make Ace do a killer rendition of it.
)

Ace and I walking off the field after getting our groove on…

Hello everyone! I’m writing this from the hotel room in Iowa! Why can’t life be one big vacation?
Last weekend Momma and I took Ace to the Center Of Science and Industry, commonly known as COSI.
This place is sweet! (especially for a big dork like me). Ace is kinda little for most of the things there, but he still enjoyed himself. It was a very electrifying experience!

Ace is all about figuring out how things work; from spinning the wheels on his toy trucks to opening and closing the dishwasher door. COSI is full of things that move. His actions create a reaction. All of the exhibits are totally interactive and I’m sure he will enjoy it even more as he gets older.
But for now he enjoys being able to see and touch everything…

The top floor of COSI is specifically for the younger kids. Ace had a blast up there. He was able to drive the ambulance! Pushing buttons by the steering wheel made the lights flash!

We always knew that he liked playing in the water in the bath tub, but never knew how much he really enjoyed water. He probably spent the majority of his time playing in the water with Momma!

COSI was a blast for Ace, Momma, and I. We bought a season pass here as well, so don’t be surprised if you get hear about more fun experiences from COSI!
As I mentioned earlier we are currently in Iowa for vacation. The hotel we are staying at has an indoor and outdoor water park and Ace was able to go swimming for the first time in his life! Stay tuned for more pics and awesome Ace adventures!

The rain stayed away and we were able to go to the zoo! Thank goodness the weatherman is wrong 99.9% of the time!
Instead of boring you with my rambling on and on about the fun times we had, I’ll illustrate our fun time with a boat load of pictures…

Ace cruising in his wagon on the way into the Zoo.

The elephants showing their best sides.

Momma and Ace enjoying a train ride!

Not real sure what this is, but it looked cool!

Ace giving his Momma some lovin’

Ace at the playground…”What to play on next?”

A Mexican Wolf

The zoo sure does work up a big thirst!

Crocodiles are just soooo cooool!

Dad and Ace petting a mini goat, “Don’t pull on his ears!”

What’s in that bottle?

A Bison and some kind of horned animals

Momma chasing Ace through the petting zoo

This Bobcat is catching some rays.

That tongue again!

Pink flamingos!

Cheesin’ it up for the camera!

The zoo must not be as fun for the monkeys…

All tuckered out..

The ride back to the car… Zzzzzzz
There will be more pictures coming soon! Sunday we are going to COSI and the camera is going to get another workout! Don’t miss it!

Vacation! It’s coming soon!
Do you know the last time we went on a real vacation? A real getaway? Me neither.
In a few weeks we are going to pack 900 pounds of stuff into the back of Momma’s truck, and guess what…it is all Ace’s!
Seriously, how can such a little guy require so much stuff? The list of stuff to pack is 3 or 4 pages long!
Anyways, if we manage to successfully drive the overloaded vehicle (at what point are you required to stop at the weigh stations with the semis?) halfway across the country, we are going to be in for some good fun in the sun!
So you are probably imagining a beach somewhere, South Carolina? Florida? Nope, and nope…Iowa! Yes, I said it…Iowa!
Seriously! We are driving to Iowa to visit some old friends, and we are staying at one of those hotels that have the indoor water park! I’m excited! (I’m really a 12 year old in a…man I hate to say it…almost 30 year old’s body)
Not only do they have an indoor water park, the hotel is located on a lake for some outdoor water fun as well!
I’m so excited!
Even though all of this puts a big smile on my face there is one thing about the trip that I’m sure will make me cry big crocodile tears…

I think I cried 23.743 gallons after filling up my truck.
I plan on taking a record number of pictures on our road trip, as long as I remember the camera (and we don’t have to pawn it off to pay for gas to make it all the way home)
. I should have some good shots to show all of ya’s .
Oh yeah! If the weather cooperates, Ace will be visiting the zoo for the first time this weekend! Please don’t rain!
This summer is going to be sooo much fun!

So, I’m pretty sure Momma is going to kill me! Why? Because, I have a weakness for FREE stuff. Especially free stuff with wheels and an engine.
In the past year I have acquired an 87 Chevy Blazer, a 77 Honda motorcycle, and 4 old push mowers that I didn’t pay a penny for. The free “junk” is piling up behind our shed at amazing rates! (If I don’t stop bringing home so called “junk”..I may just be found mangled in the “junk pile” behind our shed.
)
Guess what…none of the free “junk” ran when I got them. (and most of them still don’t…but they will).
My most recent score was a 1970′s something model John Deere 56 riding lawn mower…yes…for FREE! I found it on Craigslist and was all excited! I am tired of push mowing our yard. I knew it didn’t run, but I know that almost anything can be fixed. I was really looking forward to kicking back, with no shirt, catching some rays, with a beer in one hand, and the steering wheel in the other as grass clipping flew all over the place.
So I picked it up and brought it home, but guess what…not only did it not run, but it had no mowing deck. That means no blades. That means it is not mowing crap
Momma asked, “What the hell are you going to do with it if you can’t mow with it?”
Well, a few weekends ago I managed to get it started and actually move under it’s own power. Amazing huh? While most people would have taken this old worthless pile of junk to the dump for a proper burial, I found a good use.

Quit snickering at my oh so cool camo hat and good jeans!
Now I just look forward to kicking back, with no shirt, catching some rays, with Ace in one hand, and the steering wheel in the other as we zoom around the backyard dodging the land mines and annoying the neighbors with the rumble of a 6 horsepower engine running beneath our seat!
Screw mowing…let’s just ride!
By the way…I just realized that if I do things right, you can click on the picture and actually comment on the picture alone. Expect all pictures on DadThing to be like this for now on.

We all have what I call our “early memories”. The ones from our early childhood that we will never forget. What are some of mine?
- Climbing a fence because a snake chased me up there. I yelled for my Mom until she came out of the house and chopped the snake up with a shovel! She saved my life! She was my hero!
- My parents owned a junk-yard when I was very little. I remember watching my Dad working on cars all day every day. I wanted to do my part, so I would go around to some of the cars and take off the valve stem caps (ya know the little black caps where you put air in your tires). Then I would have to put them all back on different cars. (A 2-3 yr old’s form of customization)
- Sitting on my Dad’s lap while he operated the crane at the junk yard. I faintly remember watching the wrecking ball come crashing down and crushing the cars. I have always liked demolition…
- Riding in a race car. My Dad used to build and drive race cars. I remember riding around the track during warm up laps with his friend. (Of course he didn’t fly around the track at full speed, but to a 2 or 3 year old it was an unforgettable experience!)
- Riding in my Dad’s “Stinky Truck”. My Dad was a big hunter/trapper. And along with the hunting and trapping came all sorts of stinky things. Dead animals, blood, guts, urine, feces, and bait. His “stinky truck” was rank! I will never forget the smell of that thing.
- Seeing my brother fall into the 8 ft end of the pool underneath the solar cover. Neither of us could swim yet, so I was scared to jump in after him. I could just see him sitting there at the bottom of the pool not knowing what to do. My grandma came running up and she couldn’t swim either. We both just sat there helplessly as my brother slowly floated back to the top and my grandma could pull him out. Luckily he was OK…just a little cold.
Thinking about things like this make me wonder what Ace’s “early memories” will be? Will having me catch him inches from the floor be one? How about the scary car wash? Maybe his first birthday party?
Who knows if he will remember any of that stuff, but I know I will! I’ll just keep on doing my best to provide him with fun experiences that hopefully someday will be included in his list of “early memories”.
What were your “early memories”?

As I was driving down the street on my way home from work I see Ace sitting in the middle of the front yard in his pajamas. “What the hell?”, I say to myself. Did he sneak out the front door when Momma was checking the mail?
Nope. I know better. Momma would never let that happen. Momma was in the front yard to talking to the neighbor lady. The neighbors daughter was playing with Ace in the front yard.
It was pretty cool! Ace was loving it! He found a two foot long stick and was whacking everything in sight with it. We have one of those political signs in our front yard and Ace would run and tackle it. He was having so much fun not being restricted by the walls of our house.
The neighbors go home and it’s Momma, Ace, and me in the front yard. Now he seems to be obsessed with the street! I sit him down in the yard up by the house and he runs for the street…every time!
What is so enticing about the street? I mean, it is just a big slab of boring pavement with cars zooming up and down…
Even at one year old I need to tell him to get out of the street. I didn’t think that day would come for at least a few more years.

March 10th, 2008
Friday I left work early because the roads started to get slick and snow covered. What usually takes me about 45 minutes to drive, took a bit over 2 hours.
Central Ohio was hit Friday and Saturday with about 20.4 inches of snow, which broke a previous snow fall record of 15.3 inches for a single storm in this area, set in 1910 .
Large amounts of snow are not shocking to Momma and I because we lived in Colorado for about 4 years. It was nothing to get a couple feet of snow overnight and then be expected to be on time to work the next day.
Here, the whole city tends to shut down if we get over 2-3 inches of snow, but I loaded up Ace and Momma into the truck and we slowly made our way across town to Grandma’s house. It was pretty nice to have hardly any traffic to deal with.
Since there was no traffic, and people without 4 wheel drive couldn’t really get around, there were tons of people walking down the middle of the road because the sidewalks were knee deep! I’m not talking about side streets here. I’m talking about the main routes through town! BRILLIANT! I did have to stop a few times and wait for people to get out of the middle of the road just to get through..!
Anyways, we made it to Grandma’s with no problem where Ace’s Uncle Mike and three year old cousin Olivia were waiting for us to take them sledding. It was way too cold for Ace to go with us, so he stayed home with Grandma.
We had a good time sledding. Olivia wiped out hard! Then Olivia and Momma sat in the truck, while Mike and I were trying to kill ourselves on the big hill.
Here is a quick clip of Mike and Olivia’s wipe out…

Well, when we got back to Grandma’s, Momma took Ace sledding down the sidewalk. We just couldn’t have him miss out on all the fun.
Here are a few pics…

So anyways, with all the snow and bad roads we decided to postpone Ace’s birthday party until next weekend. Hopefully the roads will be clear by then…
PS: The prank caller returned tonight at about Midnight. Momma answered the phone this time. There were three young girls laughing in the background. Momma asked for their names and they said, “Guess!”. Momma let them know that they are disturbing a sleeping baby and to not call back here anymore…and so far they haven’t.

Did anyone watch the show My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad last Monday? Are you going to watch it tonight?
While My Dad Is Better Than You Dad is not going to win any awards, I thought it was a fun show!
There are four Dad/Child teams that compete against each other for the chance to win $50,000!
On last weeks show the Dads had to crush up office desks with a sledge hammer into tiny pieces. These pieces had to be small enough to fit through a small hole in a box. At the end of the specified time the Dad with the most weight of crushed up office desk in their box won the competition.
Seriously, what could more more fun? Destruction or demolition is the definition of fun for a guy. Add in a sledge hammer and we are talking about one hell of a good time.
Another competition required for the children to be tethered high in the air. The Dads would hand their child a Velcro dart and swing their child through the air towards a large target. Again the highest scoring team wins this challenge.
Since they have already tested strength and accuracy another challenge was to test the Dad’s intellect in a question and answer round. The questions were fairly simple, though.
At the very end of the competition the top two Dads take turns shooting a projectile out of a gun to bust out windows for points. The kicker is that the Dad not shooting gets to stand in front of these windows with a frying pan and tennis racket to try and block the projectiles from breaking the windows.
The Dad that makes it all the way to the end gets a chance to win $50,000. The dad is asked questions about his child… What is his favorite color? What is his favorite saying? What is his favorite meal cooked by Mom? In order to get these questions right a Dad has to be very close to his child. For each question answered correctly they win $10,000.
All in all I thought My Dad Is Better Than You Dad was a very entertaining show. Probably because I would love to do something like this. I checked the website to see how to enter to compete on My Dad Is Better Than You Dad, and the kids have to be ages 8 to 12 in order to compete.
Think the show will be around in 7 years so that Ace and I can enter? Probably not…
Oh well, I’ll keep tuning in each Monday at 9/8c and pretending to be those Dads.
Cheer me on tonight when you watch the show, because I will be competing in every event, right from my living room!
Update: I got an email from an online publicity guy from NBC thanking me for writing about their show, and he did mention that there are video excerpts from the show available on their site.
Here is the sledge hammer desk challenge if you would like to see what the show is all about…

Ace has tons of toys and spends the majority of his day playing with them. I left the room for a second and when I came back in I couldn’t find Ace.
After a few seconds I spotted the little booger. All those toys make for a great kid camouflage…

This weekend was slam packed full of fun. We went down to Charleston, WV to see Sara Johns, Little Big Town, and George Strait in concert!
Not sure how many of you that read this site are country music fans, but have you heard George Strait’s new single? It is called “I Saw God Today”. Have a quick listen to the song…

I remember this feeling like it was yesterday. I remember when Ace was first born I just stood there in total amazement. I didn’t say a word. The nurses had to tell me it was OK to come over and touch Ace, say hi, and take his picture.
After everything settled down and I went outside for a breath of fresh air, I was like WOW!
The world seemed to be a better place…
